Since the beginning of his presidency, Barack Obama has hosted a Fourth of July barbecue for members of the military and their families. For the president’s final cook out, Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe provided the day’s musical entertainment.
Kendrick’s setlist included “Swimming Pools (Drank)”, “Money Trees”, “Bitch Don’t Kill My Vibe”, “Poetic Justice”, “A.D.H.D.”, and “Alright”. Surprisingly, he did not perform “How Much a Dollar Cost”, which President Obama called his favorite song of 2015. Kendrick also heavily reworked the songs to omit any curse words or controversial language — it was a family friendly event at the White House after all!
Monáe, meanwhile, performed “Dance Apocalyptic”, “Q.U.E.E.N.”, and “Electric Lady” as well as a cover of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy”.
Afterward, both artists joined President Obama on stage as he led a birthday singalong to his daughter, Malia, who turned 18 years old today.
